Dear Mommy's Friends,
I am going on my first plane ride soon and am worried that my mom is getting kind of nervous. Do you guys have any tips that she could use for flying with me and surviving the airport? Also, any other tips for traveling with a baby will be greatly appreciated. (I think it will help me to enjoy the trip better knowing that my mommy feels confident about traveling with me).
Thanks,
Wyatt

Tips for Trip

Don't worry. Babies are usually the best when traveling. It is when they are 2 and 3 that you really have to worry. I am a pretty seasoned traveler with children by myself and more times than not people try to help you all they can. I have only had one rude person in all my times traveling. When I want to go home to Utah it is a two hour drive, and then usually 8 hours in planes (I always have to do a connection flight.) I am always sick and worried about doing it and I way over pack and I don't sleep the night before, but then once I get to my destination I reflect and find that all went well. I will admit that I have slipped my kids benadryl once or twice to make them sleep. Don't tell anyone that.
I used to get major anxiety taking my kids on planes, but it isn't that bad. If you can get through security the worst is behind you. Pack as little as possible in your carry-ons and have all liquids ready in a bad to save stressing in line. Wear easy-on/easy-off shoes for yourself, and don't put shoes or jacket on Wyatt b/c they'll usually make you take them off. You can usually change babies in the back of the plane on the floor. Bring a changing pad or use an airline blanket (they'll throw it away when you're done). My favorite travelling toy for little babies is one of those light-up flashlight thingies that spins around - they sell them at Party City. They can be a life saver. I feel like the frequent flyer guy (Bill Murray?) in those old SNL skits. :)
Good luck!
I find it easiest to check the stroller and carseat, and then just put the baby in a sling. It is SOOO much easier not having a stroller going through security.
If Jason isn't flying with you, he can get a special pass to go through security to the gates in order to assist you.
If Wyatt gets fussy while flying, it could be because of the air pressure. Just be prepared to nurse him. I usually would nurse my babies while taking off just to help relax them. I've flown with all my babies so many times. With Ethan, we even went to Chile! I would also bring sanitizing wipes - I would wipe down all the trays/arm rests around me. It's RSV season and you can't be too careful! Have so much fun! Are you going to Utah?
I took Brooklyn on a 4 hour plane trip when she was 5 months old. I was worried about it! But I checked stroller, carseat, etc. Way to hard to have those things. Secrity went pretty well to. I was worried about her ears on take off and landing I researched it and they said have the baby suck on a bottle, binky on landing and take off just in case! It was alot easier then I was thinking. Dont stress! He will do great! Plus depending on airline... you get to board first!!
a stroller that you can fold up with one hand, and someone to get a special pass to help you to the gate (this is totally legal and they will give a helper one if you bring them to the ticket counter and explain the situation!)
I remember we went to Hawaii for Cory's work when Brock was 6 months old. The only thing that is different to a baby when flying is they don't understand why their ears feel funny with the cabin pressure changing. If you can do a binky, or feed him during takeoff, then that should help. Also, bring his carseat with you up to the gate. If there's an empty seat, you'll get to keep him in it next to you. If there's not an empty, seat, they'll take the car seat and stroller as you are walking down the ramp to board the plane.
Where are you going? Could you reinvite me to your blog?
I second a lot of people - it was so much easier flying with a baby that doesn't move much. Be sure to pack a pacifier (if he takes one) and be prepared to nurse on the plane. I nursed during take off and landing (with my hooter hider cover). A little awkward but I got over it!
I'll let you borrow our kennel! :)What are you talking about? He will be perfect on the flight! He's too little to be horrible. All you have to do is make sure you have a nursing cover and you're set. And if he takes a binkie. That helps with the ears.
You have gotten lots of great advice from everybody! So my only thing is just be prepared for the worst (extra diapers and wipes, an extra outfit incase of blowout, disposable baggies for poopie clothes, etc)and expect the best - little babies really do great on the airplanes cuz they love to be held and they can usually fall asleep in your arms and be happy. I have flown twice times with my 5 month old in the last two months and she is soooo easy - I forgot how easy they are at that age. I just nurse her when she starts to get fussy and let her nurse until she falls asleep and then snuggle her on my shoulder and let her sleep for as long as she can! He will do great but I do ditto the try not to take all your stuff through security - it is such a pain! I didn't even take a stroller my last two trips because it is just easier to hold a baby than deal with all that mess when trying to get on the plane!
I used to stress a ton about flying. Then I realized that it always seems to go better than I expect. Just plan on nursing (get a window seat) and try to get a nap for your lil' guy before you leave. Or if you can get him to sleep in your arms do that. I remember one time going to the bathroom on the plane to bounce Tanner to sleep. It was odd but it totally worked. The lull of the engine helped him sleep. Good luck!
Go buy a new toy. That way, he will keep busy with it. Something with a mirror or wiggles. On take off, you have to have him in your lap, however, if you are sitting in the window seat, it's great to have him stare/look out the window as the plane is taking off. Our little girl LOVED this.
