"'Twas 11 days before Christmas around 9:38, when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate......."
This is part of a poem I saw after tragedy struck our nation. On Friday, December 14, 2012 a gunman entered Sandy Hook Elementary and killed about 28 people, 20 of them being kids. As I heard the news and saw pictures I teared up. When I saw a picture of teachers guiding their students to safety I began to sobb. I can't even imagine being in that situation.
As a teacher, I've had to be in lockdown several times with students. We are supposed to act normal and be calm and most importantly keep the students safe. As stories kept unfolding of the brave teachers and students, I stood in awe. But the devastation of all those families that wouldn't have their little ones at home for Christmas ripped my heart strings. Completely devastating.
Sometimes when tragedy comes it takes awhile for it to sink in with me. This past week we were all sick. Let's just say the Plague hit all of us. It really was bad. It's the sickest Wyatt has ever been. But there was a moment that touched me. He said, "Mom, will you hold me?" Of course we enjoyed the next few minutes on the couch together and I started to tear up because it finally hit me. As difficult as sick kids can be sometimes (while you are sick too) I was so blessed to be able to snuggle Wyatt and the twins. So blessed to still have them call me mom because at that moment there were 20 moms that couldn't snuggle or comfort their little 6 year old. They wouldn't hear that sweet little voice say, "Mom."
I know that there is hope for the families of Newtown, CT through Jesus Christ. I saw a rainbow on that devastating Friday afternoon that made me think that there is always hope. Every time it rains, there is always a rainbow. After trials and tribulations come many blessings. Our nation has come together as we mourn the people of Sandy Hook Elementary.
So for now, I'll just hug my loved ones a bit tighter and say, "I love you" a bit more.

There's always a rainbow after rain
