Food Storage: Grind, Bake, Enjoy!

Lately, even before all this Swine Flu craze, I've been really lamenting over our food storage. Whenever I hear people talking about it I try to walk the other way but then the next group is talking about it too. I just get too overwhelmed and find myself thinking "Who thinks of this stuff? I would have never thought of that." This must be a sign for me to get my act together and do it. I keep telling Jason to help me do different things (or at least be slightly concerned with me) but he is NOT interested to say the least. I keep thinking, "Yes, we are in MAJOR trouble and will starve but at least I'm trying." (Except for the fact that after this Swine flu hit Jason all of a sudden is interested in everything I've been saying about food storage. He even went to Costco to "pick up a few things" he thought we might need. Isn't this why we do it beforehand so we are not in a panic?)

Every month for our Ward's Enrichment we have been doing something for food storage/emergency preparedness. The theme is "Back to Basics" and I am loving it! We have learned how to make bread, garden, 90-day food supply, etc. They are even thinking about doing some other fun things with emergency preparedness but I don't want to be a spoiler.

So, with all of my stress I decided I really did need to do the things I've been taught. I've been working on my two-week menus for our 90 day supply. One for "normal" meals and one for "starvation." They are really stressing buying pantry items and use those for meals. AGHHH!!! I'm getting stressed out just typing this.

Back to the REAL reason for the post. So, last week I decided to grind some wheat. It was a disaster! The bowl wasn't pushed in all the way so it went EVERYWHERE! That's when I really said, "We are doomed! Forget it! I'll just keep going to Costco." It is so much easier for me to buy a few loaves of bread at Costco and freeze them but in case I can't go to Costco I need to practice the whole bread thing. I've made bread before but I just hate to use that kind of bread for sandwiches....it's too thick and I don't know the calories!

Well, I got over the whole disaster and grinded some more wheat...this time it was a success! Yesterday, I made wheat bread and it wasn't too shabby. It actually tasted really good and I found myself wanting more. From grinding, to baking, then to eating, it only took me about two hours and that included playing with Wyatt and putting Wyatt down for a nap! It wasn't as bad as I thought and was quite fun. I think I may do it again sometime. Here is the finished product! Enjoy!

Kate, just take it one thing at a time! The bread looks amazing. You can't run faster than you're able. I have to keep telling myself that too since I tend to freak out. We've got some shelves and we're gradually trying to fill them up. Great move on the two-week menu. It's a start!

Way to go Kate! The whole making bread thing totally overwhelms me, but I really need to figure it out, and soon! Well, the whole food storage thing is stressful for sure but I'm trying to get a leg up on it too. Anyway, proud of you for persevering. Oh, and will you fill me in on the menus for 90 days? I know nothing about that.
